St. Augustine Chess for Charity Club QUADS

Chess for Charity Club is coming to St. Augustine! We have partnered with St. Augustine chess players to hold a donation based tournament at the Council on Aging. Hunger has no zip code! Donations will help to support the Council on Aging food pantry. Chess for Charity Club was founded in February 2021 and as of December 2022, we have donated hundreds of baskets of food, supported over 300 chess players by hosting free rated tournaments and provided free chess classes. To encourage the growth of chess, we have also hosted free Tournament Director (TD) Workshops and held free guest lectures and simuls by influential chess professionals like FM Peter Giannatos and FM Jorge Oquendo. Chess for Charity Club ranked #1 in the state of Florida for the most US Chess rated events in 2021 and 2022! Please consider attending our to help further chess in Florida and to continue to help those in need.

TOURNAMENT DETAILS

This is an official USCF rated tournament. Active USCF number required.

WHAT IS A QUAD? After all the players have entered, they’re ordered from highest rating to lowest. Unrated players are usually placed at the low end, although sometimes the TD will place them somewhere else. The top four players are placed into their own section (a “quad”), then the next four highest in another section, and so on down the list. The players in each quad play a round robin, one game against each of the players in their section, for a total of three games each. If there is not an even multiple of four players, the lowest section (usually) will have the few extra players and play a three round Swiss tournament rather than a round robin. The quad format is popular in one day events, and results in players of the most similar playing strengths being paired together for all three rounds. Generally that month’s supplement rating will be used to divide players by rating. However, the TD may assign certain players a higher rating if he thinks it appropriate.

------

Time Control: Game 45 minutes with a 5 second delay.

Chess sets and clocks provided. TD may combine sections/use accelerated pairings, if needed.

ABOUT US

Chess for Charity Club is an entirely volunteer-run, self-funded and donation-based family organization dedicated to giving back to our community. Inspired by our children’s love for the beautiful game of chess, Chess for Charity Club serves the community through the generosity of our members. We collect nonperishable food items during our free classes and free rated chess tournaments and donate that food to local food banks. Our chess instructors and tournament directors are a group of volunteers that donate their time and knowledge to help further chess in Florida. Please come and experience what we offer and if you can, bring a nonperishable food item because like in chess, EVERY PIECE COUNTS!
